U.S. Department of Energy Report
The U.S. Department of Energy compiled a report entitled Motor Challenge.  One section addresses Power Factor issues directly.  This report gives both technical and illustrative information and presents the explanation in common English.  A very informative and information packed 4 pages.

Detroit Edison Power Factor Improvement Workshop
Detroit Edison prepared a state power point presentation which goes through specific points of power factor, how it effects electricity usage and what steps can be taken to improve it.  This is 29 pages packed full of technical and graphic information.  People that are a little more technical and do not understand power factor will gain a basic understanding with this presentation.

Hodges Electrical Report
In 2008, Hodges Electrical was asked by The city of Tallahassee to test the effectiveness of a capacitor based power optimizer.  Using a 1/3 horsepower motor, it was run until it used 1 KWH of energy.  Then the same motor was run introducing the capacitor unit.  With the power optimizer engage, the motor ran 71 minute, 44 seconds longer using the same amount of energy.  That is 26% more efficient using the power optimizer.

ElectroTek Power Factor Tech Paper
This is a synopsis of a study done by ElectroTek showing how capacitors can improve power factor rating and reduce energy costs.  This study is geared toward commercial and industrial usage and gets technical in places.  It emphasizes the need to evaluate capacitance need to ensure the maximum benefit from power factor correction.

DTE Understanding Power Factor
Detroit Edison provides this 1 page explanation of power factor, what it is, why it is important, what contributes to poor power factor, how power factor affects your bill and what can be done to improve your power factor.  This 1 page document provides a concise picture of power factor that is understandable to the typical electrical user.

Greg Taylor’s Engineering Paper
Greg Taylor in one of the pioneers of residential power savers/optimizers.  He is acknowledged as one of the people instrumental in taking 40 year old technology and adapting the concept to single phase, residential usage.  This paper points out the relationship between Power Factor, Real Power, Reactive Power, Apparent Power and Grid Loss.

This is a chapter out of Tony R. Kuphaldt’s text book that relates specifically to power factor.  Tony has been an electrical engineer for fortune 500 companies and now brings his 30 + years experience to classrooms with a textbook that combines theory with practical application.  Individuals that really want an in depth understanding of power factor will enjoy this.
